Friday, March 19, 2010 - Companies 1 and 3 were dispatched to a reported brush fire behind Best Buy Department Store located on Mall Circle Drive. Engine 12 and Deputy Chief Scott Beltz (C-11) arrived on scene to find a moderate fire in the wooded area approx. 1000ft. from a paved roadway. C-11 and engine 12 were able to utilize an access road used by Monroeville Mall Maintenance and Monroeville Water & Sanitary Authority. Once units were able gain access to with in 200ft. of the fire area, Mini Pumper-3 arrived on scene and stretched 200ft. of 1 3/4" hand line over the hill side to the area of fire.
Fire was knocked down within minutes, Firefighters began to remove debris with hand tools to open hot spots. Remains of a shelter were drenched to ensure no rekindle. Monroeville Police were on scene.
Fire was comprised of a make shift shelter, approx. 20x20, made of cut tree limbs and trees. Ambulance 19 was onscene to assess pt that came out of the woods with burns to body. Male was transported to hospital. Units were placed back in service.
